Obituary for Anne Tchir

It is with great sadness that we announce the passing of our mother, grandmother and great-grandmother Anne on March 14, 2019 at 92 years of age.

Anne was predeceased by her husband Nick ( 2004), her father John and mother Catherine, and her sisters and brothers, Jean, Stella, Nick, Henry, Tony, Mike, Steve, Harry, John and Peter.

She leaves to mourn her sons David (Joyce ) and Norman (Gillian),granddaughters Janice (Brad) and Melissa (Av) , and great granddaughters Serena and Natalie, sisters Sonia, Mary and Florence and brother Ernie along with family and many friends.

Anne was born September 7, 1926 in Hazelridge Manitoba to what became a family of 15 being, 6 sisters and 9 brothers. Some of the family remained in Hazelridge, others moved to Winnipeg and Toronto. It was evident that family would remain the most important aspect in her life.

At a young age, Mom journeyed with her sister Sonia to Jasper Alberta where they worked at the CN Resort Hotel, then returned to Winnipeg. In 1950 Anne married her war hero Nick and started their life together on a farm in Hazelridge, raising their sons David and Norman.

Mom and Dad were very active in the Hazelridge community as members of the Hazelridge Legion and the Community Club. Anne was especially honored and proud to be one of the ‘Perogy Baba’s” who were directly responsible for raising funds through perogy sales that enabled the building of the new Hazelridge Sports Complex Indoor Rink. She was thrilled that the sign depicting Hazelridge as the “Perogy Capital of Canada” is located across from the family farm.

Anne was very active with the Immaculate Conception Church at Cooks Creek with the ladies auxiliary. It was the countless hours where she also applied her perogy making and cooking skills for church functions, helped in preparing the Grotto and Church for the annual pilgrimage and other church activities that she shared with the many outstanding- devoted friends and members of the church.

Mom ‘s pride and joy throughout her entire life was family, both immediate and extended. Family was always first. Family functions took priority and only the best was her standard, which always included an outstanding meal. Mom detested the existence of paper plates. It had to be regular dishes, cups and cutlery that were permitted, regardless if it was a family gathering of relatives, a quick snack at home or lunch brought out to the field during harvest. Mom would cherish the opportunity to pass on her cooking and baking skills to family and friends. Her ultimate joy was having her granddaughters Janice and Melissa in the kitchen learning “Baba’s cooking and baking techniques”. They were her best students, and she was their best teacher.

Mom’s way of relaxing was to keep busy. Although She enjoyed watching curling and loved her Blue Jays and Maple Leafs, it was during these times that she did her knitting and crocheting. Everyone in the family got the standard issue consisting of a handmade quilt, knitted slippers, scarfs, pot holders and endless supply of perogies and baking.

Mom and Dad also enjoyed their well-deserved holidays in the United States, Cuba, throughout Canada and spending time at the family cabin at Bird Lake.

Mom was always there for all of us, in good times and in bad. It was her warmth, compassion and humor that provided us the strength to see things through. The advice that she would give anyone was, “Be with your family”.

Our family would like to extend our deepest appreciation to the Holy Family staff on the 4th floor for their compassion and outstanding care they gave Mom during her 7 years at Holy Family. It had become her home and they were her extended family.

Prayers will be held at Seasons Funeral Chapel 576 Balsam Crescent in Oakbank on Tuesday March 19 at 7:00pm. Divine Liturgy will be held at the Immaculate Conception Ukrainian Church, 68003 Hwy 212 and Zora Road in Cooks Creek on Wednesday March 20 at 10:30 am. Interment will follow in the parish cemetery.

In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to the Immaculate Conception Church at Cooks Creek , the Holy Family Nursing Home or the Alzheimer Society of Manitoba.
