Obituary for Leon Botchar

Peacefully on Wednesday, March 6th, 2019 Leon passed away at his residence.

He will be lovingly remembered by his wife Jeanette of 68 years, children Eleanor (Konrad), Richard (Teresa), Randy, Bev (David). Leon was also blessed with grandchildren Adam (Natasha), Jordan, Dominique (Kevin), Danica, and five great grandchildren. Leon was predeceased by his seven siblings: Frances, Anton, Stanley, Helen, Anne, Michael and Joseph.

Leon was born and raised in Cook’s Creek and was the youngest of eight children born to Vincenty and Josephine Botchar (Boczar). Leon grew up on the farm and remained there well into his retirement years. His initial start in farming was working the fields with horses. In his early years he found many challenges due to weather conditions or when crops failed to produce. Leon sought winter employment in Winnipeg and surrounding area to help supplement farm income and support the family. Gradually, as farm equipment improved and grain prices stabilized, he found life on the farm less challenging. Leon gained many skills as time went on, enabling him to repair his equipment and vehicles, as well as building structures. He took pride in his fields, ensuring that they were weed free. This same pride continued in his yard, well after he retired from farming. In his late 80’s he would rise early in the morning to work trimming trees with his chainsaw. Also in his later years he thoroughly enjoyed his visits with active and retired farmers at the local coffee shop.

Family was of utmost importance to Leon. He was very proud of the accomplishments of his children and their families. He always enjoyed having all of the family over for dinners and celebrations. Friends and neighbours were most welcome to their home where food, pickles, refreshments and laughter were always in abundance. Memories of his kindness and love will forever remain in our hearts.

Cremation has taken place and internment will be at a later date. A funeral mass will be held Saturday, March 16th, at 10:30 a.m., St. Michaels Church in Cook’s Creek. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made in memoriam to the Cooks Creek Community Centre Building Expansion Project. www.cookscreekcc.ca
